Car parts and mechanics in The Gambia

Surrounded by Senegal, The Gambia shares roads, trade and often car parts with its neighbour. Here is how to buy the right parts and travel safely across the border.

Buying parts in Banjul and Serrekunda

Parts are sold by shops, importers and second-hand dealers in the Greater Banjul area. Many parts also come from Senegal, where Dakar’s markets are a major source. Give your VIN (17 characters) and, if you can, the original part number: it is the only way to be sure a part fits. Check your VIN with our free decoder.

Travelling to Senegal

The Senegambia Bridge over the Gambia River at Farafenni has made the trans-Gambian road much easier for traffic between northern and southern Senegal. Before crossing the border:

  • check that your insurance covers Senegal; the ECOWAS Brown Card, issued by insurers, extends motor third-party liability cover to ECOWAS countries;
  • carry your licence, registration and insurance documents;
  • check tyres (including the spare), oil, coolant, brakes and lights.

Finding a good mechanic

Ask for a diagnosis first, a quote before work, and your old parts back. In Senegal, the piec'oto app lists verified mechanics and parts sellers (in French).

Road safety

Seat-belts reduce the risk of death for vehicle occupants by up to 50%, and a correctly worn helmet reduces it by more than six times for motorcyclists (WHO). Slow down in towns and villages, and never drive tired or after drinking.

Frequently asked questions
